The latest and increasingly unawaited novel in the Haruhi series, 涼宮ハルヒの / Suzumiya Haurhi no Kyougaku (The Shock of Suzumiya Haruhi), by 谷川流 / Nagaru Tanigawa,  looks to have  been delayed yet another year, the second time it has been delayed.

It now looks as if three years will elapse before any new release in the formerly popular series…

Reports indicate that the leaked schedule of light novel releases published in Sneaker magazine fails to make any mention of the title, which can be taken as a tacit admission of delay. Previously the sequel was set for a mid-2007 release, but this was postponed a year.

This means it is likely the series will go three years without a novel release, which should leave no-one in any doubt as to the oblivion facing the series, especially if the anime rerun proves to be mere eventful marketing rather than the dramatic coup Kadokawa is likely hoping for.

Just what the author is thinking is anyone’s guess.

Probably nobody will remember Haruhi by 2010, having forgotten it in a haze of of Mio-induced delirium…

Kadokawa: No Haruhi-chan For You, Idiots!

Fans hoping to see the scheduled broadcast of Haruhi parody anime Haruhi-chan tuned in eagerly to their YouTube channel today, but were instead greeted with a 46 second “nice boat” video announcing that the video had not materialised, and nothing more.

The video accrued 165,000 views in the hours after it was upped, along with 2,000 incredulous comments and a two-star rating. You can view it here.

Efforts are currently underway to have it removed for copyright infringement (the yacht pictures).

It is not clear whether this is another of their wretched stunts, a genuine delay which they decided not to announce, or something else, but whatever the case it seals Kadokawa’s reputation as a band of untrustworthy trolls whose marketing department’s objective appears to be to grind the Haruhi franchise into dust.

Wouldn’t it be better to just not patronise such an abominable company?

Haruhi Season 2 Due (Says Newspaper)

There will be a second season of the Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi, says major rag Mainichi. For details, see Newtype, they say.

The almost surreal marketing efforts surrounding Haruhi seem to have become yet more convoluted with this.

On the one hand, many are quick to point out that surely they are jumping the gun in reporting an announcement of an announcement a month in advance? Should the announcement turn out to be marketing fun and games they will have made themselves a laughingstock.

On the other hand, many wonder if perhaps Mainichi have reason to be confident; possibly they have behind the scenes assurances of what may transpire?

Mainichi may have a damaged reputation, but they are still a major, respectable newspaper, so from this perspective it is a little implausible that they would make fools of themselves by reporting a non-story; making a Haruhi related error also seems unlikely given the announcement comes from their anime section, which is able to follow these matters professionally.

Whatever the case, Newtype have secured a major marketing coup either way – now they have national newspapers reporting on their vague announcement of a possible new series announcement.

New Haruhi TV Anime Details Due

The February edition of Newtype promises “big news about the Suzumiya Haruhi TV anime” in the March edition. All speculation focuses on this being regarding the hugely anticipated and much belated second series.

Fans have immediately split into two raging camps, those who regard this as provocation designed to stimulate interest about some lesser event, or perhaps a pathetic tidbit along the lines of Haruhi’s new hairstyle, and those who think this to be the One True Announcement heralding the airdates for the new series.



Given the incredible vapidity of most Haruhi marketing and the unfavourable ratio of gimmicks and publicity stunts to actual news of import, the more sceptical observers do have a point. However, it seems to be “about time” for the anime (that is to say, people are going to start forgetting about it and not caring soon, even the author has stopped churning out books).

Still, it seems they couldn’t get away with, for example, announcing a repeat or some such as being “big news”, could they? Not without bringing a torch wielding mob down upon themselves…

More sly and irrelevant material designed to incite fan speculation and anticpation, or actual news regarding the almost mythical new season?

New Look Ponytail Haruhi


“Ponytails are quite a hassle”. Yet another hairstyle for Haruhi – the alternative for her previous long haired alternative version. Fetching enough, but a new hairstyle does not a sequel make, although judging by their comments they seem to have that covered as well. Straining my eyes to read the uncharitably low resolution scan, I can discern nothing else of note – building suspense, no doubt.

I would like to comment that I think this “all new” Haruhi series is a scam. I know that the website for Haruhi went down last year with a fake 404 code error and had links leading to hints of a new season, so the creators have already shown they have a sick since of humor. I predict that the first episode or two of the new season will probably start out like the first seasons did, but Kyon will keep having this “feeling” that something is not right or that “he has done this all before” Then there will be some kind of reality break down again that happened in the old series and things will be “reset” back to “normal” and the 2nd season of Haruhi will commence!!!

Sorry for all the “”", that’s just what I do.

The End of Suzumiya Haruhi? Gekidou Sales a Damp Squib


The news that Haruhi Wii dance game Suzumiya Haruhi no Gekidou’s opening day sales managed a pathetic 8,500 units, according to announced figures, has been greeted by fans not with horror but with derision.

It seems there can be no doubt now that Haruhi fans have dwindled precipitously, and that those that remain are more jaded than is convenient for the purposes of marketing to.

The game itself seems a good bellwether of these trends; without much in the way of innovation or gameplay, its chief selling point is reasonable production values and the presence of the essential Haruhi cast. Character goods, in other words.

Additionally, a substantial contingent doubtless viewed the game as an extra to the accompanying Fraulein figure, further diluting its effective sales between two bundled products.

This state of affairs is much the same as with previous games, which have been uniform knock-offs, however these sold much better, reaching heights of 140,000 in the case of Suzumiya Haruhi no Tomadoi (PS2, February 2008), and 87,000 in the case of Suzumiya Haruhi no Yakusoku (PSP, December 2007).

Their opening day sales were correspondingly high.

As it is reasonable to extrapolate out from opening sales to total sales (a poor seller on its opening day is unlikely to experience any rebound), even a generous estimate would suggest likely total sales in the region of 20,000 (including the figure-less edition which some purchased).

A far cry from the heyday of the franchise, where merely roping in Aya Hirano and commissioning a Noizi Ito cover apparently guaranteed success for any product.

The Wii is also a popular and current console, so it does seem reasonable to compare these figures.

Given all this, is the franchise now in terminal decline? Most fans are now quite jaded at the treatment they have received from anime producer Kyoto Animation and publisher Kadokawa, to say nothing of the hiatus the novels suffered.

Few are willing to believe KyoAni’s announced announcement is anything but another tiresome marketing ruse, so we are left to wonder about the prospects of the series even if it is resumed in anime form.

A case of chronic mismanagement of a franchise, spelling a decline in popularity?

Or will amnesiac fans flock back to the banner of a second season, should it ever appear, and forgive their past mistreatment?

Suzumiya Haruhi no Gekidou Released


The long awaited Haruhi dance game for the Wii, 涼宮ハルヒの激動 / Suzumiya Haruhi no Gekidou, is finally with us, and the fan response is positive.

Since this is a dancing game, you will doubtless be wanting to see some videos of the game in action:


As you will recall, the game is an adventure game in which the story is propelled by successful dancing; the actual dancing itself takes the form of correct controller manipulation in response to the on-screen cues, in a manner reminiscent of DDR.

There are also mini-games available…

All manner of songs, settings, characters and of course costumes are available through the course of play. Various additional modes are included, hopefully greatly enhancing replayability.

Sadly, the Wii does not lend itself to graphical splendour, but the graphics do look adequate. Involvement of the original seiyuu and similar ensures an experience close to that of the anime.

The DX pack comes with an exclusive Haruhi articulated figure (Fraulein), so this is likely the undisputed fan choice.

Haruhi Second Series Airs in April


According to the latest commercial for anime rag Newtype, which had previously announced its announcement, the new TV series of the Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi will begin airing in April.

Fans are in shock, and are understandably having trouble accepting this news, but it seems genuine enough.

As you can see from the caps shown, the CM, voiced by Aya Hirano herself, introduced numerous images of the issue, showing off Haruhi related interviews and the like.



What is of interest to us is the cover above, which bears the (small and yellow) text:

Elsewhere (top), in much bigger lettering, we see more ambiguous wording to the effect that “The Haruhi TV anime is finally underway!”



This CM has been confirmed by a number of viewers.

Now, Haruhi marketing being what it is there is much scope for scepticism, but it is difficult to interpret such unambiguous wording as anything but a rather anti-climactic revelation regarding the release date for this incredibly highly anticipated title.

We will know more on the magazine’s release, by the 10th of February at the latest, but in the mean time it appears the prayers of Haruhi fans have finally been answered?

Or will KyoAni bring down a torch bearing mob upon itself by revealing it to be airing in April 2012? Or perhaps by announcing a rerun of the original “Haruhi TV Anime”. Surely not? It is for reasons such as these that nobody believes a word they have to say anymore.

One final piece in the puzzle is that Aya Hirano apologised in a recent blog update for not being able to update as she was working so hard on something she couldn’t say anything about, but would love to tell us…

Newtype’s Shocking Haruhi Announcement Unveiled


Anime rag Newtype’s announced announcement is finally with us, arriving slightly early, and it is sure to shock such expectant fans as still remain after Kadokawa’s marketing abuses.

The rag breathlessly explains that the long awaited repeat of Haruhi season one will commence in April; fans will doubtless be delighted to hear that they will once again be able to watch the show on TV, only a few years after it originally aired.

They are even kind enough to provide important details of the production of the first anime, in case it proved hard to remember from so long ago.

Fans will be glad to hear Newtype devoted its carefully ambiguous cover and TV advertising to this important news, as there is no new information regarding the second season at all.

There will be no back-to-back broadcasts or otherwise, and Kadokawa have gone so far as to categorically deny announcing anything at all relating to the second series, which now appears to be on the same timely release schedule as Duke Nukem Forever.





What they do mention is that music anime K-On! will indeed be produced by Kyoto Animation, just as we heard previously, albeit unofficially.




The Disappearance of Suzumiya Haruhi indeed… For those who remain, it is time to move on and leave this franchise to die.

“April Haruhi TV Anime” a Rerun: Angry Mobs Form…


The news that the “Haruhi TV Anime” was set to air in April, thought by all to be either the long awaited second series or an almost unbelievably perverse marketing stunt, in fact does turn out to be a carefully worded piece of deception: it refers only to a rerun of the previously aired first season of Haruhi

Fans are predictably outraged, though it remains to be seen whether they will finally abandon the series, or will merely grumble and obediently commence purchasing should a new series actually emerge.

The dread confirmation emerged after direct enquiries to Kadokawa, which drew official confirmation that it was merely their grandiose way of pulling in the punters to view their repeat airing.

Strange that they wouldn’t bother to mention the fact that the new airing was a repeat of the first season in any of their material?

Their use of just “TV anime” without mentioning the name of the series now seems retrospectively suspect, and their deliberate efforts to incite speculation about the 2nd season, only to then deceive fans with weaselled wording, is surely nothing more than wilful and reprehensible deception.

Is this some disastrous attempt at generating “buzz”, or are their marketing departments entirely staffed by incompetents? Certainly, fans will likely not believe a word they say from here on, and quite sensibly too.

Probably most fans will not care anymore after this latest disappointment, but there is some lingering speculation that a back to back broadcast of the first series followed directly by the second is what is planned – this would mean a summer start for the title.

It would probably be better for fans just to forget this wretched series ever existed and obsess over something else, however.

I’m not buying any of their crap until I see either Haruhi or FMP. God help them if they are doing another Key adaptation. How is 2ch taking this? I’m sure they have to be beyond pissed like I am now. Newtype is to blame just as much for this crap, you’re telling me that somebody didn’t have the common sense to put it’s a re-run on the cover. Whatever was left of the Haruhi fanbase pretty much just died with this.

Haruhi Wii Dance Game Cancelled


According to the official announcement by way of this poster, the much anticpated Haruhi dance game, Suzumiya Haruhi no Gekidou, due late November and which we saw much of earlier, is to have its dance portion cancelled in favour of some intriguing minigames.

It looks like the replacements could be interesting in their own right:



Nagato Viewer – a game in which you can scrutinise Nagato’s movements via a camera. Looks as if it could exceed the dance game in popularity.


Haruhi fortune telling.


Mikuru Remote. It’s not clear exactly what this consists of, but Mikuru Beam is mentioned enticingly.


We also have this, and visible on the top picture is a baseball minigame.

It’s not clear whether, as some now believe, they actually dropped the dance component, or if they are practicing some amusing, if befuddling, marketing, and the games pictured here are either ficticious or minigames in addition to the dance component, with the exercise being a publicity stunt. The latter seems more probable.

At any rate, if they do go through with Nagato Viewer at the expense of the dance component, I’m sure protest will be muted.

Haruhi Second Season Episode Dated

Against all reason Haruhi fans are still hoping for clarification on the matter of whether the rerun currently airing will actually contain new episodes, and with Kadokawa merrily stringing them along, they are left to glean what they can from third party reports.

The latest such report comes from the recent Wakayama TV listings, and seems quite credible as such.

If their schedule is to be believed, the 8th episode of the rerun will be titled “Sasanoha’s Rhapsody”, which does not correspond to any of the episodes in the first series, and so is thought to be a new episode. What it turns out to be will be known when it airs, at 1AM on the 25th.

Astonishingly, stations have apparently been told not to reveal any details of what they are actually broadcasting where Haruhi is concerned, so the listing may be in danger of disappearing thanks to the surreal nature of the Haruhi PR machine, which has been trying to kill any confirmation of a new season since its initial ambiguous announcements of one.

Lingering fans who have not converted to Mio-ism will doubtless be pleased if this turns out to be the new episodes (not) promised.

Others will doubtless be perplexed at just what Kadokawa is trying to acheive with its bizarre burial of an unconfirmed new season in the middle of a rerun…

Haruhi Second Season Airs with Rerun


TV stations have now not only confirmed that the “new” season of Haruhi will start with a rerun, but also that it will amount to 28 episodes, finally confirming the “new episodes mixed in with or ont the end of the old episodes” theory.

Fans rejoice at the news, although they must by now be wary of unpleasant surprises…

As usual Haruhi-based news arrives in spurts: first, we heard that the title of the first episode aired would be the same as that from the original broadcast.

Now we hear that unofficial confirmation (it seems possible Kadokawa has ordered stations to hold back details) from TV stations, Saitama TV and Chiba TV, suggests the show will air in two “cours”, or seasons, and constitute 28 episodes, being treated as a “new” programme.

With the original coming in at 14 episodes, the only logical conclusion (not that logic has much place in Haruhi marketing) is that the additional 14 episodes will be the newly produced second season, and will either follow directly on from the broadcast, or be interspersed with the old episodes.

New Haruhi Season Confirmed as Rerun


TV listings have updated in preparation for the broadcast of the “new” season of the Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi, revealing the first episode to be none other than the very familiar “Asahina Mikuru no Bouken Episode00”, which of course has already aired and is number one in the “broadcast” order.

The episode will broadcast at 2AM on the 8th of April; the schedule is visible here (note that this is a humdrum TV listings page and not some loudly trumpeted announcement, so the probability of date related shenanigans is rather low). It seems to be confirmed by multiple sources.

Desperate fans have immediately begun clutching at straws; the rumour that new episodes would be mixed in amongst the old, or added to the end, is the main hope. In fact, the notion that the next episode may turn out to be a new one seems to be one of the main incentives for viewing the broadcast…

One 2ch denizen points out that Newtype always collects new broadcasts into a summary page, and never places reruns amongst them. The imminent Haruhi broadcast has not been mentioned here, suggesting that the broadcast is indeed simply a repeat.

A look through the schedule also reveals the broadcast to have rather a restricted run for a major new series.

On a purely pragmatic level, it would make no sense to broadcast a “new” season mixed into the old whilst not actually informing the fan base that it was being broadcast, as most would likely never hear of it (with only a week to spare even more so), or would treat the entire broadcast as merely being a rerun.

On the other hand, an unscrupulous but effective tactic would be to cultivate the expectation of something new to be broadcast amongst the old in order to give some incentive for viewing an otherwise standard rerun.

With the sales of the two recently released Haruhi games having collapsed, it seems that the “Haruhi boom” will be well and truly finished should this broadcast not manage some new content.

Haruhi Second Season Due After All?


The latest announcements with respect to Haruhi are being interpreted by many as referring to a second season airing in April, not the generally inferred rerun of the first season.

Aya Hirano is quoted as saying “Reprising the role of Haruhi was a pleasure!”

Those prepared to believe anything now largely suspect a mixed broadcast of new and old episodes.

However, this is Kadokawa, so who knows what is going on…

The usual tedious Haruhi marketing continues despite the imminence of whatever is to constitute the broadcast, and ease with which confusion could now be cleared up. The summary:

In a lengthy feature, their careful campaign of confusion continues: above you can see their theme of “renewal” applied to an old promotional image, which has been redone (below).

The comments from several seiyuu, including Aya Hirano, manage to carefully avoid giving any useful information despite amounting to several paragraphs.

Aya Hirano says “Reprising the role of Haruhi was a pleasure!”, which many take as an indication of a new season, though many also think she may be referring to Haruhi-chan and Churuya-san

Some even speculate a mixed broadcast of the two is planned, following the original out of order sequence with an additional 12 episodes, though some wonder how Kyoto Animation could manage this whilst airing K-On in the same season.

We do learn that the show, whatever it is, is due to air in the early hours of April 3rd, so the truth cannot be long in coming.

Fans of bikini model and occasional seiyuu Aya Hirano are in uproar over the embarrassing clothing malfunction which befell her in a recently published photo shoot.

The star model’s bikini was worn improperly, we hear. Swimwear aficionados are aghast at the error, and many wonder just how such an obvious blunder was allowed to slip through. Below you see the proper way of wearing the bikini in question.

The impact of the obese model’s latest blunder has made her career of pouting in alluring swimwear more difficult to take seriously for many, to say nothing of the impact on “Aya Style”, though her essential charms seem to remain intact.

Perhaps she should explore a new career direction by pursuing her occasional stints as seiyuu?

The general opinion of Ms Hirano not being the sharpest knife in the drawer also seems to be getting reaffirmed by this news, although others convincingly point out that it is likely her stylist who deserves censure.

Whatever the case, it may well be something which only contributes to her mystique, and her fans are unlikely ever to perceive aught but forgivable faults in her, however overweight she is.

Kadokawa Issues Haruhi Gag Order


Just when fans thought they had secured some reliable evidence of the existence of the Haruhi second season, Kadokawa has moved to scotch them.

Now we hear that lynchpin broadcaster Saitama TV is issuing a categorical refusal to comment on the series, after only days ago having confirmed with other broadcasters that the series would have 28 episodes.

The broadcaster will now only answer with the request to instead see the official Haruhi homepage. The immediate suspicion is that Kadokawa has moved to gag broadcasters from revealing any details regarding the anime.

Although the suggestion that new and old episodes will be mixed together or broadcast back-to-back is not directly challenged by this development, it does rather suggest that the broadcasters, in providing useful information to viewers, contravened Kadokawa’s policy of issuing only ambiguous or misleading information.

Currently the major possibility appears to be that Kadokawa was hoping to keep all disinformation control centred on its official channels.

We might speculate that some contrived marketing gimmick relying on generating word of mouth publicity is planned, or that an unusual or unannounced entry into the new episodes is due.

Considering how the marketing has been handled so far, anything seems possible. Dark whispers of a simple re-repeat in the alternative airing order following the first 14 episodes have even been heard…

Kadokawa’s marketing approach to the Haruhi appears to be to sow as much confusion and distrust as possible whilst delivering as little as possible. Few productions have ever been marketed with so little respect for those attempting to follow them…

• Die Haruhi Fans hassen die Season 2, daher macht und bringt KyoAni zur Bestrafung der Fans den Haruhi Film auf den Markt.
• Haruhiisten glaubten dass die 2. Staffel von Haruhi Suzumiya no Yuuutsu schlecht ist wegen dem Plan des Bösen von KyoAni die das Böse und Vernichtende in den Haruhi Film mit rein verarbeitete.
• Haruhi-Fans meinen der Film ist sehr gut und weit besser als die Season 2 und bewerten den Film in den Anime-Daten Banken sowie in MAL oder AS, obwohl sie eigentlich wissen dass die Season 2 nicht schlechter ist als der Haruhi Film. Nur eben dass weil im Haruhi Film das Böse steckt zerstörte es die Season 2 und die Fans wissen das noch nicht.
• Die Haruhiisten bestrafen die Season 2 und zerstören sie. Dann verschwindet das Böse aus dem Haruhi Film und die Fans merken dass es das es die Besrafung von KyoAni war weil die Fans die Season 2 hassten.
• Dann bestraft KyoAni die Fans, die Fans kämpfen mit dem 150 Minuten Haruhi Film und versuchen als sie alles erkannten die Season 2 zu retten, das Movie bestraft darauf hin die Fans..
...bis dann die Apokalypse eintritt und die ganze Welt unter geht. Und Schuld ist der Haruhi Film und Kyoto Animation. Vielleicht ist Kadokawa dann auch Schuld aber das weiss ich nicht.

Ja so ungefähr läuft dass dann ab das ganze, und alles wurde zerstört. Daher ist es so wichtig dass die Season 2 gerettet wird und bessere Bewertungen bekommt.
